Why Workplace Design Needs More Than Just Functionality: The Power of AV for Culture, Creativity, and Wellbeing

workplace

As New Zealand businesses face ongoing challenges around talent retention, hybrid work, and employee wellbeing, there’s a growing case for using AV (audiovisual) technology not just for functionality—but as a creative force that can transform the workplace experience.

According to recent international research, 65% of AV professionals believe that technology should serve artistic and aesthetic purposes—not just practical ones. Yet, only 27% of businesses are currently using AV to showcase art or culture in their spaces.

It’s a missed opportunity, especially in today’s competitive job market.

The Design Disconnect: What Today’s Workers Really Want

Younger employees are especially clear about what they value in a workplace. Nearly half of workers aged 24 to 35 in the UK say they’d consider quitting their job due to an unattractive office design. A further 21% report a negative impact on their mental health due to uninspiring or poor-quality workplaces.

These insights reflect a global trend that resonates in Aotearoa too: the physical work environment matters. It's not just about desks and whiteboards anymore. It’s about spaces that inspire creativity, support wellbeing, and foster human connection—whether you're in the office or dialing in remotely.

AV as a Strategic Tool, Not a Nice-to-Have

New research from the Art of Productivity report by Kinly reveals that AV technology is quickly becoming a key part of workplace strategy:

  • 69% of AV teams are now collaborating with HR departments to support wellbeing goals.

  • 75% of AV professionals say their work directly supports staff welfare.

  • 51% of businesses are using digital signage and immersive displays to enhance the employee experience.

  • 31% are actively using AV tools to support neurodiverse employees—through sensory-friendly design or accessibility features—with nearly half planning to follow.

At NZ Vision, we see this shift firsthand. Businesses across New Zealand are no longer just investing in tech for meetings and presentations. They’re creating multisensory environments that reflect their brand, support their people, and encourage creativity.

Building Culture in a Hybrid World

As hybrid work becomes the new normal, AV is playing a crucial role in keeping teams connected—and aligned. 71% of AV professionals believe that AV tools help build a sense of community between remote and in-office teams.

Digital art walls, mood-based lighting, immersive displays, and curated content zones are being used not just to impress visitors—but to create environments where people want to be.

“Creative environments fuel performance. Office design is no longer just an aesthetic choice—it’s a strategic one,” says Kinly CEO Tom Martin.

We couldn’t agree more.

Bringing It Home: What This Means for NZ Workplaces

Here in New Zealand, we’ve got a unique opportunity. As more businesses look to reimagine their workspaces post-pandemic, AV technology can be a game-changer.

Whether you’re designing a new office, upgrading a shared space, or looking to support staff wellbeing, the message is clear: AV is no longer just about function—it’s about feeling.

It’s about making your workplace somewhere people want to show up. Somewhere they feel inspired, included, and connected.
